Summary of Towns in North St. Louis County

Florissant-Ferguson, officially referred to as Florissant and Ferguson, are two cities inside of St. Louis, Missouri, often called suburbs. With a population exceeding 71,000 and a city area of 19 miles, Florissant and Ferguson inhabit a large chunk of St. Louis and is a historical city in its own right. Founded in the early 18th and 19thcenturies, the cities were originally stationed near the Wabash railroad, and are currently home to multiple notable residents including NFL stars and their families. The towns are also home to more than a dozen private and public schools, making them an educational center of St. Louis.

Florissant Restaurants

Florissant: As one of the second ring suburbs of St. Louis, Florissant is large, thriving, and supports a diverse population and culture. With 52,000 residents, multiple schools, theological colleges, and proximity to the University of Missouri-St. Louis, the city is a good one for families and students alike. Florissant is one of the oldest settlements in Missouri, although the exact settlement date is unknown, and had an active population of French and Spanish settlers by 1786. Today, the city is inhabited by primarily French and German cultures, but traces of Spanish architecture and influence can still be seen around the area. Florissant is known as one of the safest and best places to live in the STL area, even earning the title of “#1 Best Small City to Retire to In America”, “2nd Safest City in Missouri”, and in 2012 was ranked #76 on Money Magazine’s list of “The Top 100 of Money Magazine’s Best Places to Live”.

History of Florissant: Florissant was founded in 1776 and covers about 12.8 miles with a population upwards of 52,000, making it one of the largest suburbs in St. Louis. While it was founded in 1776, the settlement is believed to be one of the oldest in Missouri, and was historically known as ‘Blooming’, ‘St. Ferdinand’, and ‘Florissant.’ Florissant is ranked number 76 in Money Magazines best places to live, and the city features multiple schools and a large library. With notable residents including NFL players and other world class athletes, the city has a prestigious name, but little to attract tourists or visitors, other than its quiet community, small shops and businesses, and beautiful architecture and streets.

Ferguson: Ferguson is most well known in recent years as the hometown of Michael Brown, who was fatally shot in 2014. However, the city’s history dates back to the mid-1800s and by 1880 nearly 200 people called the town their own. The city dates back to 1855, when land was granted by William B. Ferguson to the Wabash Railroad, resulting in a new depot. Today, Ferguson is a thriving city and home to over 21,000 people. The area supports 19 Christian churches, 11 public and private schools, and an independent community library within the district.

History of Ferguson: Ferguson was founded in 1894 by William Ferguson in an attempt to create a station on the Wabash Railroad, which ran until 1964 but is now defunct. The city grew and eventually featured part of St. Louis’ famous streetcar system, even having a road with only one track, where a loop that is still visible to tourists, was later constructed around. Ferguson was also home to the longest streetcar line in the United States, which ran from the West End Narrow Gauge Railway to the city limits, making the city easily accessible to everyone. Today, the city has a population of more than 13,000 enrolled students, and more than 21,000 local residents.

The two cities, Florissant and Ferguson have grown together and are frequently referred to by the same name. Standing inside of St. Louis, the two cities offer a cultural and economic safe haven for tourists and citizens alike. Visitors can tour art museums and galas, visit street shops and cafes, view historic buildings some of which date back to the early 19th century, and view the historic railways or the streetcar system. They city also features a flourishing theater, in no small part thanks to its many educational institutions. Local festivals include the St. Louis Family Theater Series, and the Applause Season.

Bridgeton: With a population of only 11,500 people, Bridgeton is small, but important, as it serves as one of the primary transportation hubs in the Greater St. Louis area. The city is home to parts of the Lambert-St. Louis Airport, multiple railroad and interstate connections and metro rail. The city’s history for transportation dates back to American Indians using trails through the area, which prompted the French to settle there around 1724, and by the time of the Louisiana Purchase, it was already home to a thriving Spanish population. While small, and most schools in the district are outside of the city, Bridgeton is home to multiple international airline headquarters including Trans State Airlines and GoJet Airlines, and a library.

Hazelwood: With a population of 25,000 people, Hazelwood has little claim to fame other than being the headquarters of the United Pentecostal Church International, but is a popular suburb for St. Louis dwellers to move to. A prime location right on major Interstates, including Lindbergh Boulevard and Highway 370 makes it easy to travel from the suburb to a job in the city. Hazelwood High School and the United Pentecostal Church International’s Urshan School of Theology are the area’s only schools.

St. Ann: St. Ann was established in 1948, making it one of the youngest cities in the area, and making it part of the post-war expansion, which included the development of more than 10,000 homes around the St. Louis area. The original development was a defense housing project, and the city is one of the few to become a town. Today, the city is declining as many of the jobs, including the local mall have closed, and population is currently about 45% lower than at the town’s peak in 1980.

Spanish Lake: Spanish Lake is a city of 19,500 people, bounded by the Missouri and Mississippi River’s, and Highway 367 and Interstate 270. The area dates back to 1768, when it was used as a town for Spanish troops while they built a nearby fort, and later became a farming village for the fort. By 1870, German immigrants had primarily taken over the area, and by the 1950s, the town had become a rural refuge for those fleeing from Pruitt-Igoe housing in St. Louis. Today, the area shows its mixed cultural and historical background.

Bellefontaine Neighbors: In addition to having the longest name of any incorporated city in the United States, Bellefontaine Neighbors stands out for its very diverse population, proximity to St. Louis, and a variety of age groups. The city is 20 minutes from the St. Louis Arch and downtown St. Louis, and supports a variety of economic development projects including a mall, as well as renovations and developments.Farmer’s Markets in North St Louis City– CountyNorth City Farmers’ Market 314-241-5031
