Tam Yam Goon – One of the dishes most commonly associated with Thai, Tam yam Goon is a soup made of jumbo shrimp, mushrooms and shallots with flavors coming from lemongrass, lime leaves, galangal, chilis and fish sauce. You can find all of the ingredients at a local St. Louis food market, but you can also find most of them at a traditional St. Louis grocery store.

Pad Thai – If you were to go into any Thai restaurant in the world, you could be certain of one thing, and that is that Pad Thai would be on the menu. The dish is one of the most classic and is made of a mixture of healthy Thai local foods. The dish consists of noodles, tofu, bean sprouts, onions and peanut dust (you can make a peanut sauce quite easily with peanut butter if need be).

Thai Cuisine in St. Louis

Kuay Tiew– Commonly known as noodle soup, this is a staple dish in the diet of any Thai person. Ingredients include noodles and pretty much any meat or vegetable you can think of, so if you have had it somewhere, don’t expect it to be the same somewhere else! There are as many recipes for Kuay Tiew in Thailand as there are for pizza. Try sampling as many of them as you can at STL restaurants by trying different broths, and adding noodles and the meat of your choice.

Som Tam – Som Tam is a stretch into the exotic, and as a spicy papaya salad, is hard to top if you’re serving it to guests. Som Tam consists of shredded green papayas, chili peppers, and sweet and sour sauce. You can usually get this dish side by side with rice and sweet and sour or bbq chicken.

Gai Med Ma Moung – If you’ve ever heard of roasted chicken cashew, then you’ve heard of this dish. Gai Med Ma Moung is one of the most complex and beautiful dishes in Thailand, and also one of the most delicious. The dish is based around roasted cashew nuts, soy sauce, garlic, honey, chili peppers, chicken and basic spices.

Popular Thai Dishes

Other famous Thai dishes include Geng Kheaw Wan Gai (Green Curry Chicken), Tom Kah Gai (coconut chicken soup), Kao Phad (fried rice), Massaman Curry (Coconut Curry) and Khao Man Gai (Chicken & Rice).

Most Thai food served at local St. Louis restaurants is incredibly delicious. However, most of them also have a spicy kick. If you’re planning to make them yourself, you should probably same some Thai food in St. Louis first. And if you’re planning on going to Thailand, enjoy! Remember that most dishes are actually quite wonder!
